About Us
The Water Project, Inc. is a Christian 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that's bringing relief to communities around the world who suffer needlessly from a lack of access to clean water.
We help provide basic and life-sustaining needs of people, believing that we restore hope by enabling our partners to make a life-changing impact.
We believe the issues facing Africa, Latin and South America, Asia, and other under-developed parts of the world are not simply today's problems. Rather, we act knowing that these issues merely stand in the way of tomorrow's hope.
What We're Doing
We're Providing Access to Clean Drinking Water, with Your Help!
We are working to raise awareness and affect real change around the issues of water scarcity throughout the world.
We do that by connecting donors to water project partners who are providing clean water to under-developed nations.
We have two simple and related goals.
- Spread the word about the lack of access to clean water and about the relatively easy solutions to the problem in places like Kenya and Cameroon.
- Compel those who hear the story to act and bring about change by sharing their own resources (time & money).
We think everyone who reads this is able to help in some way.
How We Spend
As an organization we have very few administrative expenses. Most of our work in advancing the effort to help bring clean water to places like Kenya and Cameroon happens through online advocacy campaigns and local group volunteers. So, every dollar donated to a water project site is used to fund actual construction.
Who We Work With
We're empowering local NGOs (non-governmental organizations) and missionaries with an established presence in effected communities to do the work that's needed to find and collect clean water. That means we send money and expertise to help local communities build their own long-term water solutions and then ensure they are trained to manage it.
We believe that our partners in the field know best how to help their communities. Our part is telling their stories and inspiring people to act.
For example, in partnership with The Sharing Way and a local NGO, the Africa Brotherhood Church, The Water Project has constructed a number of water projects in Kenya. These water projects are improving the lives of over 10,000 people in seven communities. The clean drinking water provided is being used for domestic purposes, raising livestock and micro-irrigation of crops.
We're also very excited about our partnership with Thirst Relief International to bring Biosand Water Filters to Cameroon. This project is the first to truly allow donors and the partners they support to share in the projects and the lives they touch via the internet. See more at The Water Project: Cameroon.
Projects We Support
Using local labor and management, and donated funds, we help dig wells, build small dams, collect rain-water in large tanks, and filter dirty water with Biosand water filtration systems. We believe it is essential for assistance such as ours to be a help, not a hand-out.
Where We Work
The Water Project is currently focused on building a community of volunteers and raising money to construct water wells and rain water collection and filtration systems in communities in Kenya and Cameroon.
How We Began
We began our joint mission to alleviate suffering in August of 2006. What started with a few inspired teens and adults, in Saint John, NB Canada, now reaches thousands of people every week with a compelling call to action. The Water Project, to date, has helped over 10,000 people improve their access to clean water. All of us have experienced the impact a few voices can have. We know that every effort and contribution matters. That's why we continue to tell others, so that they might do the same.
Why We're Doing It
When we heard first-hand from the African Brotherhood Church in Kenya about the devastating effect the lack of clean drinking water is having in communities where they work and live, we had to act. We believe that bringing water to those who need it most is a natural expression of how Jesus Christ teaches us all to live. We believe these essential, life-sustaining projects will help enable the ABC and other partners to demonstrate what loving one's neighbor is all about. We believe these water projects will relieve suffering, open doors to education, stimulate economic development, and most importantly bring a lasting hope.
So simply put, we follow the teaching of Jesus who has called each of us to act, in this world, for peace and justice by loving our neighbor -- however, whenever and wherever we can.
We exist to see the world changed through this love. It is a simple message of hope in an increasingly difficult world.
We are asking everyone to come with us and work towards a common goal of seeing water make it to the mouths of the 1.1 billion people throughout the world who today suffer needlessly.
Won't you please consider joining us!
We're asking you to very seriously consider how you might be a part of this effort with us.
