UPDATE 9/21/2009 – See the wells being funded:  Ikobero School Well & Busyubi School Well

Students from Mayo High School, led by the International Relations Association absolutely stunned our team with their incredible fundraiser this past month!

We were thrilled to see the dedication and passion of these students in their work, both through the video they made and of course the more than 2 wells they funded!

Time and time again, we read letters from schools, just like Mayo High School, that set a goal and beat it…big time.  That’s because the story of water is easy to grasp.  When people understand the issues and that even one high school can dramatically impact an entire community (or two!) it’s easy to get behind it with support!

Way to go Mayo!!

They write,

My name is Devika B, and I am a junior from Mayo High School in Rochester, MN. I am copresident of M.I.R.A (Mayo High School’s International Relations Association) along with a fellow junior, Sophia D.W. With the help of Jacqueline J., the vice president ofthe club, the faculty advisor, Erica M., and countless other club members, we managed to organize and conduct an extremely successful fundraiser, called “A Drop of Water, An Ocean of Hope,” for the Wells for Schools in Kenya project.

We presented an original, short movie to all of the school’s social studies classes to promote the fundraiser, and left jars in each of the social studies teachers’ rooms for the collection of money. We held a competition between the various teachers; the teacher with the most donations at the end would win. Our school-wide goal was $4000, just enough to build a well for a community. We held the fundraiser for four weeks, and after counting all the money, we had raised a grand total of $9038.06!

Our club is extremely proud of the students and staff of our high school, as we would not have been able to raise so much money without their full support. We are all honored to have participated in such a noble effort to help provide water and hope to people in Kenya.

…And we’re extremly proud of you! Stay tuned, we’ll post pictures from your wells in just a few months!
