WildPlaces Clean Water Challenge

Fundraising Progress

WildPlaces: $1,000 (pledge)

On July 10th, 2010, you can join WildPlaces in supporting the Clean Water Challenge.

The event works in three ways:

  1. It gets youth outdoors promoting personal physical fitness and responsibility

  2. It benefits our local community and public lands by keeping the Tule River clean

  3. It helps others, in Haiti, by raising donations for The Water Project's "Clean Water Challenge" and Haiti Relief Fund.

Funds generated through the Clean Water Challenge will be used to rehabilitate broken down water wells in Haiti, damaged by the earthquake or neglect. These wells will provide clean and safe water for entire communities.

How it works

Youth groups make a commitment to partner with WildPlaces and The Water Project to improve the availability of clean water locally and globally. Groups will...

  1. Participate in a half day volunteer clean-up event (Rio Limpio) with WildPlaces staff. The Clean-up event is located along the Tule River on Sequoia National Forest, and scheduled for July 10, 2010 from 8:00 AM to Noon. Registration is located at the Park in Springville next to Gifford's Market from 8:00-8:30 AM. A WildPlaces sponsored BBQ lunch and prize raffle will be provided for participants immediately following the event.

  2. Youth groups affect the world by adding to WildPlace's donation of $1,000 dollars to The Water Project by promoting the Clean Water Challenge with friends, family and their local congregation.

Youth can make personal sacrifice donations by saving money that they would normally spend on sodas or snack foods in a month, and by getting others to make a sponsorship donation for each bag of trash removed by your youth group from the Tule River. All donations raised by each youth group will be submitted by that youth group directly to The Water Project. All donations are tax deductable and results can be tracked on-line.

You can pre-register with WildPlaces by calling 559-539-5263.

About WildPlaces

WildPlaces is a community based non-profit organization located in Springville, California in the foothills of the Southern Sierra Nevada Mountains. Our mission is to preserve, support, and protect California's natural and rural places and the people of these landscapes through volunteer-driven habitat restoration, natural and cultural education, and career development.

Recognizing the great need for river clean ups, restoration, and education in the Tule watershed, WildPlaces partnered with the U.S. Forest Service to create the Río Limpio/Clean River Water Program. During the last three years, other organizations such as the boy scouts, sports clubs, the boys and girls clubs, and other youth groups have joined the Tule River Partnership to implement 3-4 cleanups each summer.

These cleanups, which include garbage and graffiti removal and education of river users have made a huge impact on the amount of trash on the river, and has raised awareness about issues affecting river users and the community at large.
