In that time, I came to know him not simply as a colleague, but as a friend, a dedicated professional, and a person whose life touched many people. Ken was a hardworking man with a deep passion for his work. He loved what he did, and that passion was evident in the way he approached every assignment. He cared about doing things right, but more importantly, he cared about the people who depended on the work we did. ![](https://thewaterproject.org/community/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/2-2-edited.jpg) His journey at the Regional Service Hub (RSH) in Western Kenya was a remarkable one. Ken joined the organization as a driver, but he was a quick learner who was never afraid to grow, take on new challenges, and acquire new skills. Through determination and hard work, he rose through the ranks to become one of the leading pump mechanics at RSH. His story was a reminder that where we begin does not have to determine where we end. ![](https://thewaterproject.org/community/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/3-4-edited.jpg) For Ken, however, the work was about more than pumps and mechanics. Water provision was his passion. He understood what access to water meant to communities, families, and especially children. Whenever a pump was successfully repaired and water was restored, Ken would celebrate the achievement with the community. He took particular joy in sharing these moments with children in schools, knowing that something as simple as a working water pump could make a profound difference in their daily lives. That was Ken: someone who found meaning in seeing other people benefit from his work. ![](https://thewaterproject.org/community/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/4-2-edited.jpg) He also had a caring and joyful side that those of us who worked with him will remember fondly. Ken loved people and genuinely cared for everyone around the office. He loved his family deeply, and he carried that same warmth and affection into his relationships with colleagues and the communities he served. ![](https://thewaterproject.org/community/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/5-3-edited.jpg) Ken also had a special love for photography and videography. He had a remarkable ability to capture moments and preserve memories. His camera was often close by, documenting people, events, achievements, and the ordinary moments that later became precious memories. Stan, our president, recognized this passion and skill and affectionately gave him the nickname “Paparazzi.” The name captured something uniquely Ken: he wanted to make sure that the moments we shared were not forgotten. And now, ironically, the man who loved keeping memories has become someone whose memory we will work hard to preserve. ![](https://thewaterproject.org/community/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/6-2-edited.jpg) Ken’s sudden departure has left a space that will not easily be filled. We will miss his laughter, his dedication, his willingness to learn, his passion for water provision, and the care he showed to his colleagues, his family, and the communities he served. But as we mourn, we can also celebrate the life he lived and the legacy he leaves behind. ![](https://thewaterproject.org/community/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/7-1-edited.jpg) Ken’s legacy is in the pumps he repaired, the water that flowed again because of his efforts, the communities that celebrated with him, the children who benefited from his work, the colleagues he encouraged, and the countless memories he captured through his camera. His journey from driver to a leading pump mechanic at RSH is itself a testament to his determination, curiosity, and commitment to his work. His life also reminds each of us to think about the legacy we are creating through the work we do and the way we treat the people around us. The greatest legacy is not always found in titles or achievements.
