A Letter from Our Founder - December 2012

I'm so excited to be writing to you today.

The Water Project is at very special moment in our history. It's one that you helped make possible.  And right now, there is an opportunity for you to get involved in the next part of the journey. It's one that won't come along again soon.

Will you help us grow deeper and be a part of our vision for 2013?

For the past six years, we've been working to build a different kind of charity.

When we first learned about the water crisis, we set out to connect people together in ways that would change both lives and hearts.  We knew that access to clean water changes things.  We had no idea just how much.  What has unfolded, often online through pictures, stories, maps, and video has been hugely rewarding and profoundly important to be a part of.  It's also been six years of great discovery.

Some of what we've learned...

When we got started, we thought hardware was the goal.  We discovered that unlocking people's potential was the real win.  With that as a measure of success, funding innovation in community engagement while ensuring sustainability over the long-term became obvious.

We knew this was a team effort. We discovered that from advocates and donors to implementing partners and the communities we serve, working together accomplishes far more than raising additional dollars. It changes hearts. Our understanding of poverty, its symptoms and causes, is refined when we understand who our neighbors are, here and there.  We're all still learning.

We knew students would make a difference. We discovered that if we helped teachers introduce the water crisis, many more would be moved to act. To date, we've provided curricula to over 3,000 educators!  Hundreds of schools join us in funding water projects every year. Perspectives on their world are being transformed in ways that will surely ripple out for years to come.

We knew partnership was important.  We discovered that one of our most important roles is connecting the whole body together. Today we bring the best of each partner's work to all the others. Here at home we've learned so much from those of you who work tirelessly to raise money at your schools, churches, offices and homes. We're humbled by it all.

We hoped we'd grow.
We had no idea how fast that would happen.

  • We have over 20,000 donors
  • 87% of whom give less than $500
  • Many of them represent hundreds more behind the single gift
  • Together we've raised a little over $4.3 million for clean water
  • We oversee more than 690 water projects, past and present
  • We're actively working in 6 countries with 7 partners
  • We have just 3 full-time staff

Incredibly, we're on track to raise over $2 million in 2013 alone. Amazing.
What's even more incredible is the opportunity in front of us.  Six years of work have brought us to the next major chapter in our story together.  It's time for us to grow much deeper.

In 2013, in addition to funding over 200 water projects, we hope to...

  • Launch at least twenty "chapters" on University campuses through an exciting new partnership and college tour.  We're building a long-term and strategic support base through real community.  Watch for it!
  • Engage churches and schools through more intentional relationships, providing resources and one-on-one coaching to help share this great story we're all a part of, serving others.
  • Launch a smart phone app that integrates online team fundraising with our wildly successful offline "Water Challenge" fundraising tools.
  • Build our team.  We'll add additional support staff to better manage the thousands of relationships we already have with donors.  We know we can do more by growing these teams!
  • Fund water project pilot programs, testing new ideas through proven partners.  Innovation is key to finding the best possible solutions to this crisis.
  • Develop and implement in-country reporting tools;  An "app for that" to better monitor our water projects that will allow everyone to see those results online.  Is water still flowing?  We have to know and you should too.

To make this happen, we're setting aside a fund dedicated to do it all and I'd like to invite you to join this team.

Signing up to be a part of monthly giving is perhaps the easiest way to join The Growing Deeper Fund.  As you give, we'll keep you updated on our progress toward these goals.

You can give monthly at thewaterproject.org/give-monthly

We are also looking for those of you who believe in our vision and would like to help us make it happen with a significant financial investment.

While we're developing each of these programs to become self-sustaining over time, to get there we've got to take some big first steps. This is a unique opportunity to see your investment multiplied over the coming years as these commitments bear fruit.

Join us at thewaterproject.org/growingdeeper to give online.

We wouldn't be here today without you.  For that, I and the many we serve are forever grateful.  I hope you'll join us in this next part of the journey.  It's bound to be full of discovery too.  And I can't think of anything more exciting.
