Catherine No Longer Suffers to Collect Water!

Last year, your gift unlocked the potential for a brighter future for Catherine. Since then, she and the Kiyonza-Kyamukudumi Community of 600 residents have had clean, reliable water. Your contribution has made a significant impact. Thank you for making a difference!

Before the Well Installation
Seventy-four-year-old Catherine recalled what life was like in the Kiyonza-Kyamukudumi Community before her community’s well was installed last year.

"I used to walk a long distance to look for water in the next village called Kitamba. I would really suffer because I stay home alone during school days when my children go to school. I would have to fetch water, yet I have little energy to carry jerrycans for long distances. This would always affect my health because I had developed back pain. There was always overcrowding at the waterpoint; hence, I would always wait for [a] long time to collect water, spending a lot of time,” shared Catherine.

Since the Well Installation
Collecting water is now less burdensome for Catherine and the other community members in Kiyonza-Kyamukudumi.

“I really enjoy this waterpoint because it is near my home. I can collect water at any time; even when I feel thirsty, I just get my cup and take [it] to drink water from the waterpoint," said Catherine.

Having ready access to water from the well has made a difference for Catherine, allowing her to use her time and energy to improve her daily life.

Reliable and clean water lays the groundwork for improved health, education, and economic possibilities, allowing people like Catherine to thrive. We frequently hear from those we interview that "water is life!"

The Future is Looking Bright!
A year ago, you made a difference for Catherine and the rest of her community. This is just the first chapter of their story, as access to clean water continues to improve their lives!

"This waterpoint has brought development in my village because I have seen people laying bricks. I also used water from here to construct my latrine. The coming of this waterpoint brought saving[to] my village, so this has helped to improve my savings skills, and [I'm] also able to borrow small loans with low interest rates,” continued Catherine.

At The Water Project, we value sustainability and want to ensure that people continue to thrive. We commit to monitoring this well to ensure the water is always flowing and safe to consume. We inspect the system hardware, track water availability, conduct sanitary inspections, and collect water quality samples to identify risks. We work with our team on the ground to resolve them.

You gave Catherine a crucial tool for achieving her dreams: access to clean water. Together, we can excitedly expect that with this precious resource, her enthusiasm and courage will help her fulfill her dreams.

When we asked Catherine if having access to water has changed her life in any other significant way, she said, "[I] planted coffee trees and always use water for watering them."
