Zakayo Gains Time to Create a Brighter Future!

Last year, your gift unlocked the potential for a brighter future for Zakayo. Since then, he and the Wambani Community of 230 residents have had clean, reliable water. Your contribution has made a significant impact. Thank you for making a difference!

Before the Spring Protection
Seventeen-year-old Zakayo recalled what life was like in the Wambani Community before his community's spring was protected last year.

"My performance at school was badly affected because I used to waste a lot of time at the old water point. At some point, I contemplated dropping out of school completely. Many times, I would go to school in [a] soiled uniform because I had to collect water before going to school," said Zakayo.

"It was a tedious and time-consuming exercise. I could not collect water whenever I found adults ahead of me. Collecting water wasn't something I looked forward to, especially on school days!" said Zakayo.

Since the Spring Protection
Collecting water is now more accessible and safer for Zakayo and the other community members in Wambani.

"The implementation of this project came at the right time. I no longer get frequent throat and stomach illnesses related to drinking contaminated water. This water point is a godsend," said Zakayo.

"Safety is no longer a concern. The water point is now easily accessible due to the well-done stairs. I no longer have to stand in a pool of stagnant water because the spring has a properly done drainage channel, and the floor is tiled," he continued.

Your generous gift last year was much more than a simple donation; it was a powerful statement about your commitment to this community and Zakayo's future.

Having ready access to water from the spring has made a difference for Zakayo, allowing him to dream about a brighter future.

Reliable and clean water lays the groundwork for improved health, education, and economic possibilities, allowing people like Zakayo to thrive. We frequently hear from those we interview that "water is life!"

The Future is Looking Bright!
A year ago, you made a difference for Zakayo and his community. This is just the first chapter of their story as access to clean water continues to improve their lives!

"I have dedicated my time to studies and helping my parents [on] the farm. I also have time to play with my friends whenever I take a break from studying. I intend to complete high school, join university, and study medicine. In [the] future, I would love to become a doctor [and] set up a clinic in my community to ensure everyone around me enjoys good health," concluded Zakayo.

At The Water Project, we value sustainability and want to ensure that people continue to thrive. We commit to monitoring this spring to ensure the water is always flowing and safe to consume. We inspect the system hardware, track water availability, conduct sanitary inspections, and collect water quality samples to identify risks. We work with our team on the ground to resolve them.
