Abwao Water Project

Abwao Project Details:
Type: Weir (sand-dam)
Expected capacity: 2 million litres

Beneficiaries: 5,000 people (700 men - 1,500 women - 2,800 youth and children) and 5,000 livestock.

Location: The Abwao Water Project is located in Obanda Village in upper Kadiang'a Sub-location, Thurdibuoro Location, Upper-Nyakach Division, Nyando District, Nyanza Province in Western Kenya. The area is characterized by hilly slopes with sparse woody vegetation. The village covers an area of 602 km². The major activities carried out in the area are farming, mat making and rearing livestock.

Total Cost: $5,600 plus the local community's contribution.

Sponsors: Private individuals through TheWaterProject.org.

Status: Funded, Pending Construction

"The Western region and the coasts are experiencing a lot of rains. The current onset has marred most of the project activities making a lot of activities to be suspended. The weir construction has been suspended for a while in anticipation of subsiding of the rains. "
