Without clean water for proper sanitation, people become more susceptible to contracting infectious diseases. This leads to high maternity and child mortality rates. Women in impoverished nations are responsible for gathering usable water, which inhibits their time devoted to work, school, or caring for family as they have to travel long distances to collect clean water. Children must also contribute to helping their families collect water, which limits their time devoted to getting an education for their future.
