Kenya has a population of 32 million (about the same as Canada).
It is estimated that 43% (approximately 13.8 million people) do not
have sustainable access to clean water. In Rwanda, one third of the
rural population must walk to collect water from streams or other
natural sources.
Nzatani Sub-location is in Migwani Division, Mwingi District in the Eastern Province of Kenya. It is 150 kms North-East of Machakos town.
The entire Mwingi district is categorized as an Arid and Semi-arid Area (ASAL) and is characterized by rocky and rugged terrain. Most of the inhabitants in the district are peasant farmers who rely on maize and beans for their subsistence. The ABC has a church in the area.
Successive crop failure in the district has plunged households into deeper levels of poverty. Opportunities for casual labour on farms are limited (planting, weeding and harvesting). Safe, clean water will benefit the 600 people of Nzatani. And nearer water access points will reduce the water-carrying burden of women and children. The use of filters and chlorine in the water will result in immediate health improvements. Limited amounts of water will be available for home gardens. The ABC development team will work with the church to help increase family income levels through appropriate programs.
