A Year Later: "I am now assured of safe drinking water. . ."

Farmer Lydia Namusimba, 43, recalled what life was like in the Rwensororo Community before her community's well was installed last year.

"I used to fetch water from a borehole in Rwensororo centre about 1.5 km [away]. This would make fetching water hard because I would get so tired. I had to first go to the garden and then come back to get water. The waterpoint [was] being used by many people in the trading center, and it would frequently break down because of overpopulation and poor management. I would always find many people making me wait for like one hour to collect water. This brought issues in my marriage because I would not perform other domestic activities as planned. I would cook food late, making some of my family members go without food," said Lydia.

Collecting water is much simpler and faster for Lydia and the other community members in Rwensororo now.

"It is very easy for me to access water. I no longer find lines because the waterpoint is not crowded. When I reach [it], I just draw water and move [on]. This gives me an opportunity to do other things," Lydia said.

Having ready access to water from the well has made a difference for Lydia, allowing her time to complete her other responsibilities.

"I am now assured of safe drinking water [at] all times because the waterpoint doesn't break down frequently. The availability of water has helped me to improve the hygiene and sanitation in my home because I can wash clothes and bathe every day. My marriage is safe because I perform my home activities on time, prepare food, and serve my household on time," concluded Lydia.
