Last year before a new well was installed at Siekuti Primary School, students had to carry water to school and still leave their school campus to collect more during the day since they would run out. It meant children were exhausted and spent time away from classes instead of learning.
"We brought water from home for school use," said 14-year-old Shirleen.
"At school, we used to [leave to] find water at the spring. It is very far from school, so we used to go there and come [back] very late and even miss evening classes."
But once the new well was drilled, things started to change for the students and the school staff.
"We are able to save time and spend more time in classes. It has also boosted our relationship with teachers as we felt earlier on teachers hated us when they sent us for water because it was tiresome," said Shirleen.
Not only do they have time to be in class, but with readily available water, their learning opportunities are expanding. The school's hygiene and sanitation have also improved, making it a much more enjoyable place for everyone to spend their days.
"We use this water to clean classes and take it to the kitchen for cooking. We have developed a nursery bed of trees, and we use water from this facility to irrigate it. These have made us feel proud of this institution, and we enjoy it," concluded Shirleen.

Shirleen happy to collect clean water!
