A Year Later: "This water point enables easy access to clean water."

Matheu M., 14, recalled what life was like at Mutiuni Primary School before her school's rain tank was implemented last year.

"The immense water scarcity caused a lot of issues, thanks to the hot and dry climate. For instance, meals sometimes could [be] delayed, and washing our hands was difficult because there was no water in the school. We had to bear with thirst because water was insufficient, and most of the water we brought was used for cooking, and it was still not enough. Our classrooms and latrines were rarely cleaned, making learning uncomfortable," said Matheu.

There is plenty of water for Matheu and the other students at Mutiuni Primary School now!

"This water point enables easy access to clean water. I take only a few minutes to draw water from it, which saves time and allows me to easily quench my thirst. We also manage to clean our classrooms and latrines regularly. I get more time to play with my friends and study, leading to improved academic performance," she continued.

Having ready access to water from the rain tank has made a difference for Matheu, allowing her time to focus on learning and having the confidence that she will have the water she needs without worry.

"Hygiene and sanitation have improved, and I am more comfortable during lessons while keeping off diseases such as typhoid and amoeba because we are drinking clean water. Our meals are now prepared within schedule, enabling us to easily resume our classes with comfort. This has improved our overall academic performance," she concluded.
