A Year Later: Water Creates Food Security!

Farmer Kanini Muli, 28, recalled what life was like in Kitile Community B before her community's sand dam was installed last year.

"Before the construction of this sand dam, we faced a lot of challenges. It was very difficult to get water. We had only one sand dam and one shallow well, which was not sufficient to [serve] all [the] community members. The water demand was very high compared to the number of users. At times, we were forced to get only drinking water from [the] Athi River, which is miles away. The situation worsened in the community such that some had to camp at the river, [and] girls falling into [the] risk of getting pregnant," said Kanini.

But life is much less burdensome for Kanini and the other community members living in Kitile B now.

"After constructing this sand dam, life has changed a lot. In the past year, I have stopped long treks to Athi River. I no longer spend a lot of time. I walk for a few minutes to get water," said Kanini.

Having ready access to water from the sand dam has made a difference for Kanini, allowing her time to not only collect sufficient water to meet her needs but also make improvements to her daily life using water.
