Your gift unlocked Amos's potential for a brighter future last year. Since then, he and the Shikoti Mixed Primary School of 814 students have had clean, reliable water. Your contribution has made a significant impact. Thank you for making a difference!
"What I like about fetching water here is the proximity of the waterpoint. The distance coverage is very short, hence it does [not] make me so exhausted as it used to be before."
Like many children in Kenya, 14-year-old Amos is responsible for collecting water to meet daily needs. Before last year’s water intervention, this task stole his time and negatively affected him.

Drinking the water caused severe consequences. Many in the community suffered from waterborne diseases that created health problems, affecting their daily lives. Limited accessibility also meant people wasted time collecting sufficient water to meet their needs. The difficult journey to collect water sapped their physical and emotional energy, creating roadblocks. For Amos, it lessened his opportunity to stay healthy.
"We had a seasonal water source within the school compound, and it was not serving us well because it was not a reliable source. It used to be affected by drought, forcing us to search for water in the community. At times, lessons were interrupted, classrooms and sanitation facilities were not cleaned regularly, and [the] majority of us used to miss school because of waterborne illnesses attributed [to] contaminated water," said Amos.
"It was very hard because we were going for water outside the school compound, and whenever we came with it from home, we were getting late to school because of carrying water together with books."
Your generous gift last year was much more than a simple donation; it was a powerful statement about your commitment to this community and Amos’s future. By supporting the water solution, you made clean water an everyday reality, fostering hope for a brighter future.
Reliable and clean water lays the groundwork for improved health, education, and economic possibilities, allowing people to thrive. We frequently hear from those we interview that "water is life!"
"Since [the] implementation of this waterpoint, waterborne diseases have reduced drastically. I was always a victim of waterborne illnesses before, which made me miss school often. But in the past year, the number [of days] I missed coming to school is countable, and this implies good health to me," shared Amos.
A year ago, you made a difference for Amos and the rest of his school community. This is just the first chapter of their story as access to clean water continues to improve their lives!
At The Water Project, we value sustainability and want to ensure that people continue to thrive. We commit to monitoring this project to ensure the water is always flowing and safe to consume. We inspect the system hardware, track water availability, conduct sanitary inspections, and collect water quality samples to identify risks. We work with our team on the ground to resolve them.
You gave Amos a crucial tool for achieving his dreams: access to clean water. Together, we can excitedly expect that with this precious resource, his enthusiasm and courage will help fulfill dreams.
"Since we no longer waste much of our time searching for water, I usually utilize it for revision or, at times, having fun with my friends. I have recorded slight improvements in my academic performance, and it is solely attributed to the waterpoint in school, which has given us enough time for studies," Amos said.
"God willing, after finishing college, I would like to be an engineer so as to bring change in my community!"
