Last year, your gift unlocked the potential for a brighter future for Memunatu and her community, and the staff and patients of the Evans Medical Center. Since then, they have had clean, reliable water. Your contribution has made a significant impact. Thank you for making a difference!
"Every child has the right to access clean, safe water to drink. It is a great privilege for me to live with clean water. This water well produces clean water, and I will not be exposed to water-related illnesses." - Memunatu.
Before the Well's Rehabilitation
Eighteen-year-old Memunatu lives near the medical center. Like many children in Sierra Leone, she is responsible for collecting water to meet her and her family’s daily water needs. Before last year's water intervention, that task stole her time because she had to travel long, exhausting distances to find water.
The staff of the medical center also struggled with the daily water crisis. They would resort to leaving the health center to find water because without it they could not offer proper medical services or keep the center clean. By the time they found water and returned with it, they were exhausted and patient care was delayed.
The difficult journey to collect water sapped their physical and emotional energy, consuming their time and risking their safety. Drinking the water they worked so hard to collect often caused further problems causing many people in the community to suffer from waterborne diseases, further affecting their daily lives.
"Before, I found it difficult to access water and I faced [a] lot of problems, walking long distances to collect water. [I] got pressure at home to get enough water. [I] also crossed the Port Loko road where vehicles pass at high speed," Memunatu shared.
Since the Well's Rehabilitation
Your generous gift last year was much more than a simple donation; it was a powerful statement about your commitment to this medical center, this community, and Memunatu. By supporting the water solution, you made clean water an everyday reality for them, fostering hope for brighter futures.
Reliable and clean water lays the groundwork for improved health, education, and economic possibilities, allowing people like Memunatu and the staff and patients at the medical center to thrive.
"I have been doing well in my academic work. Since this water well [has] been fixed, I have enough time to study, and I get good grades. Now I go to school on time. The water well [is] close to my house and it's clean, [and] safe to drink. The surroundings of the water well [are] always kept clean," said Memunatu.
You gave Memunatu a crucial tool for achieving her dreams: access to clean water. Together, we can excitedly expect that with this precious resource, her enthusiasm and courage will help her fulfill her dream of becoming a doctor one day.
The Future is Looking Bright!
A year ago, you made a difference for the medical center staff, Memunatu, and the rest of her community. This is just the first chapter of their story as access to clean water continues to improve their lives!
"The water well is within the health facility and it’s easy to access. It produces clean water and it’s safe to drink. This water helped to complete some things that I could not done before like cleaning the health facility, [and] cleaning the labor room and latrines. [Now] I have enough time to see patients in the health facility," shared Khadijatu.
"This health facility's water troubles are over. There was a great improvement in this health facility. They have access to safe, clean water and the water well produces enough water. They fetch adequate water in the health facility to carry out their daily activities. Now all the staff [are] able to clean the health facility, latrines, carry out delivery services, and clean the labor room," shared Field Officer M. Halie.
At The Water Project, we value sustainability and want to ensure that people continue to thrive. We commit to monitoring this project to ensure the water is always flowing and safe to consume. We inspect the system hardware, track water availability, conduct sanitary inspections, and collect water quality samples to identify risks. We work with our team on the ground to resolve them.
