Water Allows Esther to Begin a Farm!

Last year, your gift unlocked the potential for a brighter future for Esther. Since then, she and the Shiralumwa Community of 210 residents have had clean, reliable water. Your contribution has made a significant impact. Thank you for making a difference!

"Living with clean water gives me peace knowing that I don't have to worry about the safety of water. I live a healthy life knowing that the water [I] am using is safe and I won't fall sick," said Esther.

Before the Spring Protection

Like many in Kenya, 32-year-old Esther is responsible for collecting water to meet daily water needs. Before last year’s water intervention, that task stole her time and negatively affected her.

Drinking the water caused severe consequences. Many in her community suffered from waterborne diseases that created health problems, affecting their daily lives. Limited accessibility also meant people wasted time collecting sufficient water to meet their needs. For Esther, it lessened her opportunity to help her family create a brighter future.

The spring before protection.

"Last year before this project was built we used to drink contaminated water. We used to suffer from water-related illnesses like cholera, typhoid, and diarrhea. Fetching water was a problem, especially in the rainy season. Access used to be terrible. When not using this spring since it was open to contamination we used to walk long distances in search of clean water," said Esther.

"Getting water from this waterpoint water was hard because of the location of the source. The area around the water source was always flooded because of the poor drainage. The access was always slippery, especially in the rainy season. Carrying water from this water point was always tricky because sometimes you might fall with water."

Since the Spring Protection

Your generous gift last year was much more than a simple donation; it was a powerful statement about your commitment to this community and Esther’s future. By supporting the water solution, you made clean water an everyday reality, fostering hope for a brighter future.

Reliable and clean water lays the groundwork for improved health, education, and economic possibilities, allowing people to thrive. We frequently hear from those we interview that "water is life!"

"Fetching water now has been made easier and faster than before. Now I can just walk in and place my container and wait [until] it fills and go home, unlike before we used to carry [extra] jugs to help us in fetching [the] water. No queues at the water point because people fetch water at their own convenient time," said Esther.

"My health has changed greatly. I can't remember the last I was sick of water-related illness. I changed the way I handled water and food and this has greatly improved my health and that of my family."

The Future is Looking Bright!

A year ago, you made a difference for Esther and the rest of her community. This is just the first chapter of their story as access to clean water continues to improve their lives!

At The Water Project, we value sustainability and want to ensure that people continue to thrive. We commit to monitoring this project to ensure the water is always flowing and safe to consume. We inspect the system hardware, track water availability, conduct sanitary inspections, and collect water quality samples to identify risks. We work with our team on the ground to resolve them.

You gave Esther a crucial tool for achieving her dreams: access to clean water. Together, we can excitedly expect that with this precious resource, her enthusiasm and courage will help her fulfill her dreams.

"This waterpoint has enabled me [to] plant and sell vegetables throughout the year; this has made me earn an extra income. This extra income has helped me support my husband with the household bills. My dream is to fully engage myself in farming since that is the area [I] am good at. I want to diversify by incorporating different crops aside from vegetables. I want to start rearing dairy cattle for milk since this area has [a] scarcity of milk I will be able to open a diary where I will sell the milk," exclaimed Esther.
