Giving Update: Kipolo Community

There is really a great improvement in this community after the construction of the water well and the hygiene training done by our teams a year ago.

"We used to drink contaminated water which always led to many sicknesses, more especially during the start of the raining season," said Mahawa Turay, caretaker of the well.

"Since the time this well was completed, things are much better than in past years because people are no longer drinking the contaminated water from the swamp."

It is also apparent that the levels of sanitation and hygiene in Kipolo have improved. The reason behind the improvement was that these people lacked the knowledge of living a healthy life for the past years, said our teams. After the hygiene training, most of the people accepted and decided to change from their old ways of doing things.

People are now using dishracks, clotheslines, animal sheds, and tippy taps to ensure that they do not contaminate the water they drink and the food they eat.

"I learned from the hygiene training that I should wash my hands with soap and water," said 11-year-old Mohamed Kamara.

"I encourage my friends and family to do the same. Even though it’s not easy for them to change completely, I am still reminding them to help change their attitudes on hygiene."
