Initially, Musabale Primary School did not have enough clean water or latrines. The latrines they did have were in very poor condition. The pupils used to carry contaminated water from their respective homes, which was risky to their health and drained their energy in carrying it.
After the completion of the WaSH projects here, Musabale Primary now has access to safe and quality water. This saves the pupils' valuable time and enables them to concentrate on their studies. The handwashing facilities make it possible for the pupils to wash their hands after visiting the toilets. There is regular cleaning of the toilets by the pupils and maintenance of the rain tank and handwashing facilities so that they remain functional.
These facilities have changed the school's outlook and boosted morale. There has been a great improvement in personal hygiene and sanitation at the school, especially now that pupils can wash their hands after visiting the toilets.
"Construction of water tank has greatly contributed to [the accessibility of] clean and safe water for the pupils at the school," said Head Teacher Elphas Wakhungu.
"The classes are clean because there is enough water in the tank. The toilets have reduced congestion [in line] when the pupils want to use them. The handwashing facilities have assisted the pupils [in] washing their hands after visiting the toilets."
One of those pupils, 13-year-old Kevin Wechuli, echoed the simple yet great impacts these projects have made on his experience at Musabale Primary School.
"We have brought clean and safe water [to] our school...we have latrines, [and]...pupils can wash their hands after visiting the toilets."
