Ms. Kubwa Makes Improvements Thanks to Clean Water!

Last year, your gift unlocked the potential for a brighter future for Jane Kubwa and her students. Since then, she and over 400 students at Kakunga Girls' High School have had access to clean, reliable water. Your contribution has made a significant impact. Thank you for making a difference!

"Students now have more time for studies and rest. They are no longer burdened with water-fetching tasks, hygiene has improved, illnesses have reduced, and overall discipline and morale are better. The school feels like a safer and healthier space for learning."

Before the Well Installation

Like many school leaders in Kenya, 37-year-old Deputy Principal Jane Kubwa was responsible for supervising her students as they collected water to meet the school's daily water needs. Before last year’s water intervention, this task consumed their time, negatively affecting them.

Drinking the water caused severe consequences. Many students suffered from waterborne diseases, which created health problems that affected their daily lives. Limited accessibility also meant they wasted time collecting sufficient water to meet their needs. The difficult journey to collect water sapped their physical and emotional energy, creating roadblocks. For Ms. Kubwa, it lessened her ability to protect her students from harm and provide them with the best learning opportunities.

"Fetching water before was time-consuming and unreliable, where students were forced to walk long distances to the community spring to fetch water. Other times, we had to buy water from vendors, which was costly for the school, and we were also not comfortable with the quality of water received. This disrupted learning and created a lot of stress, especially during exam periods or school events," said Ms. Kubwa.

Since the Well Installation

Your generous gift last year was much more than a simple donation; it was a powerful statement about your commitment to this school and its future. By supporting the water solution, you made clean water an everyday reality, fostering hope for a brighter future.

Reliable and clean water lays the groundwork for improved health, education, and economic possibilities, allowing people to thrive. We frequently hear from those we interview that "water is life!"

"We now have water within the school compound, which saves time and energy. Students and staff no longer leave the school to look for water. It is easier to keep our facilities clean, prepare meals, and ensure good hygiene practices. Even during dry seasons, we have a steady water supply, and this has made a big difference in daily school operations," Ms. Kubwa shared.

The Future is Looking Bright!

A year ago, you made a difference for Ms. Kubwa and the rest of the Kakunga Girls' School community. This is just the first chapter of their story as access to clean water continues to improve their lives!

At The Water Project, we value sustainability and want to ensure that people continue to thrive. We commit to monitoring this project to ensure the water is always flowing and safe to consume. We inspect the system hardware, track water availability, conduct sanitary inspections, and collect water quality samples to identify risks. We work with our team on the ground to resolve them.

You gave Ms. Kubwa a crucial tool for achieving her dreams for her students: access to clean water. Together, we can excitedly expect that with this precious resource, her enthusiasm and courage will help them all fulfill their dreams.

"Teachers no longer have to supervise students going out to fetch water or manage constant shortages. They can plan their lessons better, focus on teaching, and enjoy a more hygienic work environment. It has reduced stress and improved their productivity," said Ms. Kubwa.

"Since the water point was installed, we have improved sanitation by constructing handwashing stations and renovating the toilets. Our boarding facilities are also better maintained, and we have reintroduced school-based clubs focused on hygiene and environmental care," she continued.

"I am most proud of the improved attendance of our students, and we have created a supportive learning environment where students can thrive. Also, clean water has brought dignity, and now the community sees our school as a model of progress and health," she concluded.
