Before the Spring Protection

Like many women in Kenya, 51-year-old farmer Joyce Masiza is responsible for collecting water to meet daily water needs. Before last year’s water intervention, this task stole her time and negatively affected her.

The spring before it was protected.

Drinking the water caused severe consequences. Many in the community suffered from waterborne diseases that created health problems, affecting their daily lives. Limited accessibility also meant people wasted time collecting sufficient water to meet their needs. The difficult journey to collect water sapped their physical and emotional energy, creating roadblocks. For Joyce, in particular, it limited her opportunities to succeed in farming.

"Due to its openness, water was easy to get contaminated and difficult to fetch without the use of a bowl or a jug," said Joyce.

Since the Spring Protection

"I have no worry about the waterpoint since it has been protected. The water source allows people to fetch water without straining. Living with clean water makes me feel proud of myself and [is] comforting, which comes with peace of mind. I no longer struggle looking for water from distances since the completion of the water point," said Joyce.

At The Water Project, we value sustainability and want to ensure that people continue to thrive. We commit to monitoring this project to ensure the water is always flowing and safe to consume. We inspect the system hardware, track water availability, conduct sanitary inspections, and collect water quality samples to identify risks. We work with our team on the ground to resolve them.

"Water has made me achieve a lot in different areas, like farming and keeping livestock. It has also enabled me [to] finish my house, which was incomplete due to a lack of funds. [I] am proud of achieving my farming activities since I had enough time to prepare the farm. My future dream is to focus [on] and be [a] great farmer who can feed the entire community. It is through the water source that I will have enough time to concentrate on achieving my goals in life," shared Joyce.
