Amazing Progress for Shitoto Community!

Thirty-year-old farmer Maureen Salasya recalled what life was like in the Shitoto Community before her community’s spring was protected last year.

Before the Spring Protection

"Last year I faced many challenges from the water source we were using at the time. Firstly, the water caused my children to miss school several times because they were sick from drinking the contaminated water. The contamination was a result of the water source flowing openly. Secondly, the water source was quite far from my home. I took a lot of time to get the water and do other chores. Additionally, there was a ditch on the path leading to the water source. It was very difficult and risky crossing it to access the water," said Maureen.

Since the Spring Protection

Collecting water is now simpler and faster for Maureen.

"It is safer right now fetching water since the water point has been well constructed. The water is also safe for drinking since there's a chlorine dispenser at the water point that enables us to treat our water immediately after fetching. This has reduced the rate of diseases caused by water contamination," shared Maureen.

"My health and my family's health in general has really improved. My children are rarely out of school due to health-related issues. I have been able [to] accomplish so much as an individual as a result of being in good health condition," said Maureen.

"The best thing about living with clean water is how safe I feel as I drink the water," Maureen continued.

The Future is Bright

Having ready access to water from the spring has made a difference for Kassim, allowing him to use his time to improve his future.

“Having a reliable water source has really improved our rice growing project due to having a proper drainage system. This has improved our financial stability immensely. We took an initiative to start growing onions, kale, cowpeas, and arrowroots. We are now able to cater [to] our families' needs with less strain," shared Maureen.

"My dream is to be the best farmer around this place. It is certain that access to safe and clean water will make it easier for me," said Maureen.

Joyce Naliaka, Field Officer, shares the wonderful success of the community members in Shitoto because of the protected spring.
