Last year, your gift unlocked the potential for a brighter future for Anita Sabwa. Since then, she and the Musukura Primary School of 165 students have had clean, reliable water. Your contribution has made a significant impact. Thank you for making a difference!
"The new waterpoint has transformed my work as a teacher, it has become so easy, [and] less time is used to supervise pupils. I can also teach double lessons without having worries of getting water to prepare food."
Like many in Kenya, 42-year-old teacher Ms. Sabwa is responsible for ensuring she and her students have enough water to meet their daily water needs. Before last year’s water intervention, this task stole her time and negatively affected her.
Students collected water from the river before the well was implemented.
Drinking the water caused severe consequences. Many in the community suffered from waterborne diseases that created health problems, affecting their daily lives. Limited accessibility also meant people wasted time collecting sufficient water to meet their needs. The difficult journey to collect water sapped their physical and emotional energy, creating roadblocks. For Ms. Sabwa, it made teaching extremely difficult, leaving her often unable to complete lessons. Everyone's health was in constant jeopardy, and the time spent waiting for water stole valuable teaching time.
"Accessing water was more difficult, the terrain was very dangerous, [and] it could cause injuries most of the time. The distance made me tired and not [able to] achieve my daily duties. Due to [its] location, [the] people at that time could cause water contamination because of overcrowding at the waterpoint."
Your generous gift last year was much more than a simple donation; it was a powerful statement about your commitment to this community and Anita’s future. By supporting the water solution, you made clean water an everyday reality, fostering hope for a brighter future.
Reliable and clean water lays the groundwork for improved health, education, and economic possibilities, allowing people to thrive. We frequently hear from those we interview that "water is life!"
"My health has changed because I no longer carry water from home to school for drinking. This has made me not experience coughing nowadays, which used to happen. I now teach for a long time without experiencing coughing or [a] sore throat," Anita shared.
"Collecting water now is easier and faster; most of us don't queue at the waterpoint. It's rare to see any overcrowding at the waterpoint. Our pupils' lives have become easier in that they are collecting water within the school compound, hence no more tiresome [journeys]."
"Clean, safe water makes people's lives better and brings happiness amongst them. We live a healthy life, which has no problems related to diseases," she continued.
A year ago, you made a difference for Anita and the rest of her community. This is just the first chapter of their story as access to clean water continues to improve their lives!
At The Water Project, we value sustainability and want to ensure that people continue to thrive. We commit to monitoring this project to ensure the water is always flowing and safe to consume. We inspect the system hardware, track water availability, conduct sanitary inspections, and collect water quality samples to identify risks. We work with our team on the ground to resolve them.
You gave Anita a crucial tool for achieving her dreams: access to clean water. Together, we can excitedly expect that with this precious resource, her enthusiasm and courage will help fulfill dreams.
"I have no worry fetching water at this waterpoint. My safety is well secured with no queues that cause confrontation. The availability of [the] pump has made work easier as water just comes from [the] pipe whenever I pump," she shared.
"As a teacher, [I] am really proud of practicing the concepts of time management, which has enabled me to achieve. One of them is finishing [the] syllabus on time and ensuring pupils are doing revision up to the end of [the] term, waiting for [the] final exam," Anita concluded.
