Last year, your gift unlocked the potential for a brighter future for Whitney. Since then, she and the Kamuluguywa Primary School of 498 students and staff have had clean, reliable water. Your contribution has made a significant impact. Thank you for making a difference!
"Since [the] implementation of this water point, we are no longer prone to waterborne ailments because the water source is free from any contaminants," said Whitney.
Like many children in Kenya, 12-year-old Whitney is responsible for collecting water to meet her and her family’s daily water needs. Before last year's well installation at the school, that task stole her time and negatively affected her health and education.
Limited accessibility to water meant students wasted time trying to collect sufficient water to meet their water needs for both home and school. The water points they relied upon were congested and the journey to collect water was tiring sapping their physical and emotional energy. For Whitney, that lessened her opportunity to pursue an education because she often missed class or was exhausted.
"It was very hard because the waterpoint was quite a distance from the school. We were struggling to get water because the water point was [a] distance away from the school. Time wastage was the order of the day, because the waterpoint was very congested, [and] it was used by the community members. Also, we used to be late to school [each] morning because back at home, the water sources are also far so going for water at home then coming with it to school together with books was very hectic and tiresome," shared Whitney.
Your generous gift last year was much more than a simple donation; it was a powerful statement about your commitment to this school and Whitney’s future. By supporting the water solution, you made clean water an everyday reality for her, fostering hope for a brighter future.
Reliable and clean water lays the groundwork for improved health, education, and economic possibilities, allowing people like Whitney to thrive. We frequently hear from those we interview that "water is life!"
"[We are] free from waterborne and water-related ailments. There are also reduced cases of absenteeism as every student [is] healthy," said Whitney.
"The situation has changed because [the] water point is within the school premises unlike before when we used to go for it outside the school compound. The water is within the school premises and not shared with the community members. Getting water is very easy because [there's] no long queues as we used to experience before. Since we don't take much time fetching water, [and] we utilize it for learning or revising what we were taught previously," continued Whitney.
A year ago, you made a difference for Whitney and the rest of her community. This is just the first chapter of their story as access to clean water continues to improve their lives!
At The Water Project, we value sustainability and want to ensure that people continue to thrive. We commit to monitoring this project to ensure the water is always flowing and safe to consume. We inspect the system hardware, track water availability, conduct sanitary inspections, and collect water quality samples to identify risks. We work with our team on the ground to resolve them.
You gave Whitney a crucial tool for achieving her dreams: access to clean water. Together, we can excitedly expect that with this precious resource, her enthusiasm and courage will help her fulfill her dreams.
"When I [am] finished schooling, I would like to be a journalist!" exclaimed Whitney.
