Safe drinking water, sanitation and good hygiene are fundamental to health,
survival, growth and development. However, these basic necessities are still a
luxury for many of the world’s poor people. Safe drinking water and basic
sanitation are so obviously essential to health that they risk being taken for
granted. Efforts to prevent death from diarrhoea or to reduce the burden of
such diseases as ascaris, dracunculiasis, hookworm, schistosomiasis and
trachoma are doomed to failure unless people have access to safe drinking water
and basic sanitation. Lack of basic sanitation indirectly inhibits the learning
abilities of millions of school-aged children who are infested with intestinal
worms transmitted through inadequate sanitation facilities and poor hygiene

It
is a natural requirement for all living things to have access to water if they
have to be alive. The world population is facing water scarcity. Many are dying as a result of unsafe
drinking water from unprotected sources and 80% of all
diseases in Ghana are caused by unsafe water and poor sanitation. The consequences
of unsafe drinking water, negatively affects the environmental and socio-
economic development of a nation.

Ghana, like most developing countries, struggles to improve access
to water of its urban and peri-urban population. At the moment, many areas
within the country do not have access to clean water from the national grid.
Information shows that 3.5 million people in Ghana lack access to
an improved water source and over 3,000 children under five years old die
annually from poor water and sanitation in Ghana.

Peri
– Urban Areas which comprises Top Town, Grace Community, American Farm, Bigman
town, Opeikuma, New Bortianor, Ash Town and Enigye Krom in the Awutu Senya
District and the Ga South Municipality was the communities this research
collected data and made findings.

These
areas were chosen because they are characterized by inferior infrastructure,
low incomes, and lack of recognition by formal governments. The rapid growth
and informal status of these high-density population areas have resulted in low
levels of sanitation services. These communities tend to be ignored by
municipal and authorities, who find themselves overwhelmed by the informal
sector’s sheer numbers and needs, which far outstrip the capacity of the local
planners and government. This segment of the population, therefore, should be a
focus of concern, but even the few institutions that recognize the problem and
want to do something about it find that there exists little knowledge or
experience about how to address this problem

Why It Matters

Access to clean, safe water unlocks potential

Did you know nearly 1 billion people don't have safe water to drink?

Together, we can change that. Let's fund a new source of drinking water for those who suffer needlessly without it!

Our gifts will be used to construct or rehabilitate a water project, like a well or sand dam, in Africa. We'll see pictures, GPS coordinates, and updates as they come in from the actual water project we fund so we can celebrate the results along with the community we help.

About The Water Project

The Water Project, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization unlocking human potential by providing clean, safe water to communities around the world who suffer needlessly without.

Working with local partners in countries like Kenya, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, South Sudan, and Uganda, we build long lasting water projects that are organized, owned and managed by the communities receiving them.

Together, with our partners we identify, implement, report on and follow up on every project. Then we share the whole story with you to inspire confidence in the work being done and the impact it has.
