Sub-Saharan Africa is among the areas with the greatest drinking water spending needs, especially in rural areas. The United Nations has estimated that Sub-Saharan Africa loses approximately 40 billion hours per year collecting water. The majority of these hours takes place during school time and female students are 75% more likely to miss school to fetch water than boys.
