Edwin T., 13, recalled what life was like in Bulima-Kahembe before his community’s well was implemented last year.
"I used to walk [a] long distance of about 1.5 km (nearly a mile) to another village, Rubona, and [it] would take me more than two hours. Also, during [the] dry season, sometimes there would be a lot of struggling in getting water which sometimes would result in fighting at the water point. This would make me stay for [a] long [time at the waterpoint] waiting to fetch water. Bathing and washing clothes was [a] challenge due to [the] hardships in getting water. Sometimes [I] would spend days without bathing due to inadequate water," said Edwin.
But life is much less exhausting for Edwin and the other community members in Bulima-Kahembe now.
"The water point was constructed near our home, and it takes me about 15 minutes to get water home. My personal hygiene improved because it is easy to get water, and now I can bathe all the time. I can wash my clothes and uniforms always, and this makes them stay clean," said Edwin.
Having ready access to water from the well has made a difference for Edwin, allowing him the freedom to implement better hygiene practices.
"Getting water is easy, and this has enabled me [to] stay healthy and clean. I also have enough time to rest since now [I] am no longer stressed with collecting water from a far distance," concluded Edwin.
Thank you for helping Edwin access clean water, improve his health and regain his precious time for other things.
Right now, there are others just like him in neighboring communities that desperately need safe water access. Your support will immediately go to work to provide a clean water project - and we can’t wait to introduce you to the next person you’ll help.
