A Year Later: Water for Growing Vegetables!

Joseph M., 14, recalled what life was like at Lurale Primary School before his school’s well was installed last year.

"It was [a] burden on us pupils [to] carry water from home every day. This would drag my movement, which would result in me being late for my lessons. We would share water from different unknown sources, causing some of us to fall sick," said Joseph.

But life is much less burdensome for Joseph and the other students at Lurale Primary School now.

"Getting water from this water point is easy and quickly accessible. I don't waste time anymore neither do I feel the burden of carrying a filled jerrycan to school. I am true to my teachers now because previously during our cleaning time, I would not come to school for the afternoon lessons just to evade the exercise of fetching water for cleaning," Joseph said.

Having ready access to water from the well has made a difference for Joseph, allowing him to reserve his energy for learning.

"I am able to attend my lessons fully with no interruptions. As a school, we have been able to start our small vegetable farms where we use the water from the borehole to water them. Our teachers purchase the vegetables, and we also take some home to our parents," concluded Joseph.
