A Year Later: No Longer Late for School!

Osman S., 17, recalled what life was like in the Masheka Community before his community's well was rehabilitated last year.

"Before, to fetch water was difficult for me because it took almost an hour to fetch a single rubber container of water from the swamp source. Also, to practice good hygiene was difficult due to the shortage of water. The swamp water we were drinking was not clean because we bathed and laundered clothes in the surroundings of the water source. This caused us to [get] sick from waterborne diseases, such as typhoid and diarrhea. Sometimes it was difficult for me to go to school due to water illnesses I contracted," he shared.

Collecting water is now less challenging for Osman and the other community members in Masheka.

"Now that we have clean and safe drinking water, [it] has helped limit contracting these waterborne diseases. Also, I spend less than 15 minutes getting water, and I cannot be late or absent from school anymore in terms of fetching water," Osman continued.

Having ready access to water from the well has made a difference for Osman, allowing him to collect water efficiently. He now has the time to prioritize his education without the extra stress of fetching water from the swamp.

"We have achieved to drink clean and safe water. Since the water is clean and safe, it has helped me practice better hygiene. Now that this water point is closer to our home, it has helped me to launder clothes and bathe on time. Thank you for providing us with clean and safe drinking water," Osman concluded.
