Last year, life in Mukangu was more difficult for everyone. Their spring was unprotected, exposing everyone to water-related diseases. And for kids like Derick, actually collecting the water was an everyday stressor that involved a lot of wasted time.
"Getting water here before [the] protection of the spring was very hard, especially [for] kids like me," Derick said. "For example, when it was my turn [in] the queue to fetch water, I was not given an opportunity to scoop water unless there was no one older than me following. This is because kids were not considered careful while scooping water using a small container."
But now, protected water flows easily from the discharge pipe, and the drawing point has been made easily accessible with stairs. No one needs to queue for water anymore since it takes so little time to collect.
"Getting water now is very easy because I no longer queue like before," Derick said. "I can go to the water point at any given time."
The new source of water is working to slowly improve the health and happiness of Mukangu's community members.
"I am no longer missing school simply because of being sick, and lack of school fees, or even examination fees," Derick said. "Since [the] protection of this water point, [our] ailments have drastically reduced, and my parents can now save something rather than using it for medication every time."
