A Year Later: Maiha-Kayanja Community

A year ago, your generous donation enabled us to dig a well for Maiha-Kayanja Community in Uganda. The contributions of incredible monthly donors and others giving directly to The Water Promise allow our local teams to visit project sites throughout the year, strengthening relationships with communities and evaluating the water project over time. These consistent visits allow us to learn vital lessons and hear amazing stories – and we’re excited to share this one from local team member Olive Kamusiime with you.

The community members are happy since they can now get water at any time without walking a long distance.

In the past, the community obtained water from a man-made lake that was shared with a government prison. There was the danger of children falling into the lake, and that forced some people to look for water elsewhere.

People here no longer live in fear of their children drowning in the lake, said Patrick Kaija. They are also happy because they no longer have to move long distances to fetch water, he added.

We also spoke with Nicholas Mwebaze. He was in a jolly mood as he was drawing water to take home for cooking supper.

Nicholas told us that his family now drinks clean water from the well that does not taste salty. He adds that this water is safe to drink and that you will not develop any stomach diseases. His mother agreed and said that the time it takes to fetch water has reduced from 30 minutes per to trip to 5 minutes.

Construction of the well is only one step along the journey toward sustainable access to clean water. The Water Project is committed to consistent monitoring of each water source. Our monitoring and evaluation program, made possible by donors like you, allows us to maintain our relationships with communities by visiting up to 4 times each year to ensure that the water points are safe and reliable.

One project is just a drop in the bucket towards ending the global water crisis, but the ripple effects of this project are truly astounding. This project in Maiha-Kayanja is changing many lives.
