A Year Later: More Time and Energy for Gardening!

Margaret Mwenga, 33, recalled what life was like in the Koriro Community before her community's sand dam was installed last year.

"Before the construction of this sand dam project, I used to walk for long distances, about 10 kilometers, to [the] Iguini River to fetch water for use. I would leave home as early as 6 am and return at 6 pm because of the long queues and lengthy distance. I would return home feeling exhausted and unable to focus on other activities like preparing my land. Iguini River is also seasonal with an inadequate supply of water; thus, farming and conducting personal hygiene and sanitation was a rare affair," said Margaret.

Collecting water is much faster and safer for Margaret and the other community members in Koriro now.

"I am very happy about this water point because it is very close to my home. I am now able to get water for cooking and drinking within a short time because the shallow well is nearby. I also get more time and energy to focus on activities like tree planting and preparing my land. This waterpoint also offers enough water even during the peak drought periods for hygiene and sanitation," Margaret continued.

Having ready access to water from the sand dam has made a difference for Margaret, allowing her to quickly collect water whenever needed to reserve her energy and have better health.

"Our health has greatly improved because we no longer have to walk several kilometers searching for water. I spend most of my time tending to my family, cultivating my garden, and conducting house chores like improving hygiene. I am also glad I am no longer exposed to maladies like typhoid and amoeba," concluded Margaret.
