A Year Later: No Longer Worried about Water!

Mariatu K., 17, recalled what life was like in the Mathaineh Community before her community's well was installed last year.

"Before the completion of this project, it was not easy for us. I walked [a] far distance to the swamp to fetch water since we were not having a water well by then. Even the area I fetched water from got contaminated mostly during [the] rainy season as erosion would take place, and all the dirt would be emptied in the swamp water source. Fetching water for use at home became a problem," said Mariatu.

Collecting water is now much simpler for Mariatu and the other community members in Mathaineh.

"Now it is very easy for me to fetch water for use at home as the distance from my house to water is close," continued Mariatu.

Having ready access to water from the well has made a difference for Mariatu, allowing her to attend school regularly and access water whenever she needs it.

"I am now punctual and regular in school as I have enough time to fetch water before school. Even after school, I am no longer worried to fetch water since the well is standing next to our house. This alone gives me more time to help my mum with work at home, rest, and read my notes at night," concluded Mariatu.
