A Year Later: Safe Water Closer to Home!

Fatmata Bangura, 18, recalled what life was like in Benkia Community before her community's well was rehabilitated last year.

"It was not easy for me in [the] past because of the water situation. I found it very difficult to fetch water as our community [did] not [have a] functional well. I [had to] go to the swamp to fetch water. As a result, the walking distance to the swamp made me tired. Apart from this challenge, the swamp water source easily became dirty. Even fetching water for drinking became a problem. Also, the swamp was seasonal. That situation prevented me from fetching water," shared Fatmata.

But life is much less burdensome for Fatmata and the other community members in Benkia now.

"I count it as a blessing to fetch water from this source because all the initial constraints I used to face are now over. I [am] able to fetch water with ease due to the closeness of the well to our house. This time is now used to do other important things at home. Finally, I will no longer be prone to snakes and scorpions. Since they used to attack me when going to the swamp," she continued.

Having ready access to water from the rehabilitated well has made a difference for Fatmata, allowing her to fetch water without fear more easily.

"The water point has helped me to fetch enough water for use at home. This was difficult to do in the past. Thank you for providing us [with] clean and safe drinking water," Fatmata concluded.
