A Year Later: "We can drink this water comfortably."

Esther K., 14, recalled what life was like at Mutoto Primary School before her school’s well was implemented last year.

"We got water from a hand dug well. It used to go dry during [the] drought season. During the rainy season, the water could get cloudy. The river also provided us with water for washing and cleaning classrooms," said Esther.

But life is much simpler for Esther and the other students at Mutoto Primary School now.

"The pump is near the school and classes. We can drink this water comfortably, unlike the other sources where the water was dirty. The cook doesn't need to send us to bring water. It is just at her doorstep, and [she can] prepare food quickly for us and teachers," Esther said.

Having ready access to water from the well has made a difference for Esther, even in how much time she can commit to learning instead of collecting water.

"The sanitation has improved as we mop classes as frequent as possible [and] clean latrines. We fill the water in [the] tanks for handwashing hence improving [our] hand hygiene. The water point has led to time management in that different activities at the school are under schedules, unlike [in] the past where the schedule could be interfered with because we could spend a lot of time collecting water," concluded Esther.
