Last year, your gift unlocked the potential for a brighter future for Benedict. Since then, he and the Ngungani Primary School of 184 students have had clean, reliable water. Your contribution has made a significant impact. Thank you for making a difference!
"I am performing better in class because I am not bothered by water scarcity. I get to focus on my studies, and I learn in a clean environment," said Benedict.
Like many in Kenya, 13-year-Benedict is responsible for collecting water to meet his daily water needs. This task stole his time before last year’s water intervention and negatively affected him.
Drinking the water caused severe consequences. Many in the community suffered from waterborne diseases that created health problems, affecting their daily lives. Limited accessibility also meant people wasted time collecting sufficient water to meet their needs. The difficult journey to collect water sapped their physical and emotional energy, creating roadblocks. For Benedict, in particular, it lessened his opportunity to pursue his education.
"The need to carry water daily became a priority that overshadowed academic responsibilities. We would sometimes arrive late or exhausted, missing the start of lessons. By the time we settled down, a portion of our learning time and energy had already been spent on water collection. The available water sources, such as open scoop holes in the Thua River, were contaminated by animal excrement, dust, and other pollutants. The salty and unclean water was unfit for drinking or cooking, exposing us to waterborne diseases like amoeba and typhoid," Benedict shared.
Your generous gift last year was much more than a simple donation; it was a powerful statement about your commitment to this community and Benedict’s future. By supporting the water solution, you made clean water an everyday reality, fostering hope for a brighter future.
Reliable and clean water lays the groundwork for improved health, education, and economic possibilities, allowing people to thrive. We frequently hear from those we interview that "water is life!"
"I am now drinking clean water every day, and I do not carry water from home, which has given [me] more strength to focus on my studies. I spend my time studying or engaging in extra-curricular activities," he continued.
A year ago, you made a difference for Benedict and the rest of his community. This is just the first chapter of their story as access to clean water continues to improve their lives!
At The Water Project, we value sustainability and want to ensure that people continue to thrive. We commit to monitoring this project to ensure the water is always flowing and safe to consume. We inspect the system hardware, track water availability, conduct sanitary inspections, and collect water quality samples to identify risks. We work with our team on the ground to resolve them.
You gave Benedict a crucial tool for achieving his dreams: access to clean water. Together, we can excitedly expect that with this precious resource, his enthusiasm and courage will help fulfill his dreams.
"When I grow up, I want to be a policeman," Benedict shared.
Field Officer Alex Koech shared the school's improvements since implementing the rain tank on campus. "The school now practices regular hygiene chores in its facilities and has set up a vegetable farm within the school."
