Students Have Time to Learn!

Last year, your gift unlocked the potential for a brighter future for Bundulai DEC Primary School. Since then, the school community of 513 students and teachers has had clean, reliable water. Your contribution has made a significant impact. Thank you for making a difference!

"I am pleased with the quality of the water. Since you completed the construction of the water well, the water has been well protected from contamination," said teacher Fatmata Kamara.

Before the Well Installation

Like many teachers in Sierra Leone, 30-year-old Fatmata Kamara was responsible for supervising students who collected water to meet the school's daily needs. Before last year’s water intervention, this task stole her and her students' time and negatively affected them.

Drinking the water caused severe consequences. Many in the school suffered from waterborne diseases that created health problems, affecting their daily lives. Limited accessibility also meant students wasted time collecting sufficient water to meet their needs. The difficult journey to collect water sapped their physical and emotional energy, creating roadblocks. For Ms. Kamara, in particular, it reduced her ability to provide the education she desired for her students.

"The students were having a serious challenge in accessing water to drink on the school premises. They had to dodge classes to go in search of water in the community after they had played during lunch, and [the] majority of them could not return to class until the following day. The situation affected their performances in examinations. However, they are now [able to get] water to drink from the school water well at any time. They no longer worry about drinking water in school. They have also been able to pay much attention in class throughout the day," shared teacher Ms. Kamara.

Since the Well Installation

Your generous gift last year was much more than a simple donation; it was a powerful statement about your commitment to this school and the students' and teachers' future. By supporting the water solution, you made clean water an everyday reality, fostering hope for a brighter future.

Reliable and clean water lays the groundwork for improved health, education, and economic possibilities, allowing people to thrive. We frequently hear from those we interview that "water is life!"

"Access to clean water prevents me from drinking contaminated water and helps me maintain good health. I am happy to have clean water both at school and at home. I no longer worry about accessing safe water, and this has reduced the burden of walking long distances in search of it," said Ms. Kamara.

The Future is Looking Bright!

A year ago, you made a difference for Ms. Kamara and the rest of her school community. This is just the first chapter of their story as access to clean water continues to improve their lives!

At The Water Project, we value sustainability and want to ensure that people continue to thrive. We commit to monitoring this project to ensure the water is always flowing and safe to consume. We inspect the system hardware, track water availability, conduct sanitary inspections, and collect water quality samples to identify risks. We work with our team on the ground to resolve them.

You gave Ms. Kamara a crucial tool for achieving her dreams as a teacher: access to clean water. Together, we can excitedly expect that with this precious resource, her enthusiasm and courage will help her support her students and become the teacher she dreams of being.

"As a teacher in this school, I am completely relieved from the stress of controlling the students from not going out of the school premises. However, when there was no water in the school for them to drink, I could not hold on to them. This was a very difficult task that I endured until last year when the school water well was handed over to us. Since then, the number of students present in school throughout the day has increased. I now have more time to teach, and the students can pay [closer] attention to the teaching. Their performance in class has been impressive since last year till now," she celebrated.
