Last year, your gift unlocked the potential for a brighter future for Caroline Musa. Since then, she and the Lukume Community of 126 residents have had clean, reliable water. Your contribution has made a significant impact. Thank you for making a difference!
"I like that fetching water here is now quick and easy. The spring is clean, the water flows well, and I don’t have to worry about getting sick. It saves me a lot of time."
Like many women in Western Kenya, 23-year-old Caroline is responsible for collecting water to meet her daily water needs. Before last year’s water intervention, this task consumed her time and had a negative impact on her.

The spring before protection.
Drinking the water caused severe consequences. Many in the community suffered from waterborne diseases that created health problems, affecting their daily lives. Limited accessibility also meant people wasted time collecting sufficient water to meet their needs. The difficult journey to collect water sapped their physical and emotional energy, creating roadblocks. For Caroline, in particular, she found herself spending most of her time waiting to collect water that was sure to make her ill.
"Last year, before this project, getting water was very difficult. The spring was crowded, especially in the mornings and evenings, and we had to wait a long time to fetch. The pipe people had put at the water source to help in fetching [water] was dirty, got blocked often, and did not collect all the water. Water itself was not clean, and many of us got sick with diarrhea, typhoid, and stomachaches. We also spent a lot of money on treatment instead of using it for other needs like food or school fees," Caroline recalled.
Your generous gift last year was more than just a donation; it was a powerful statement about your commitment to this community and Caroline’s future. By supporting the water solution, you made clean water an everyday reality, fostering hope for a brighter future.

Reliable and clean water lays the groundwork for improved health, education, and economic possibilities, allowing people to thrive. We frequently hear from those we interview that "water is life!"

"Since this project was implemented, my health has improved a lot. I no longer suffer from frequent typhoid or diarrhea, and I feel stronger. Because I’m healthier and spend less time fetching water, I can work more on my farm and take better care of my small children," Caroline exclaimed.
A year ago, you made a difference for Caroline and the rest of her community. This is just the first chapter of their story as access to clean water continues to improve their lives!
At The Water Project, we value sustainability and want to ensure that people continue to thrive. We commit to monitoring this project to ensure the water is always flowing and safe to consume. We inspect the system hardware, track water availability, conduct sanitary inspections, and collect water quality samples to identify risks. We work with our team on the ground to resolve them.
You gave Caroline a crucial tool for achieving her dreams: access to clean water. Together, we can excitedly expect that with this precious resource, her enthusiasm and courage will help Caroline fulfill her dreams.

Caroline harvests vegetables from her garden.
"In the past year, having reliable water has helped me achieve a lot. I was able to grow veggies and save money on food. Most importantly, I managed to start and finish the construction of a small house and a kitchen, where this water was very resourceful for mixing work, cleaning, and other building work. I also have more time for farming and home duties because fetching water is quick and easy," said Caroline.
Caroline concluded, "My dream is to expand my farming and start keeping more animals like goats and chickens so I can sell them for income. Access to water will make this much easier because I will be able to provide enough clean water for the animals and grow fodder for them."
