Before the Spring Protection

Like many women in Kenya, 48-year-old Ester is responsible for collecting water to meet daily water needs. Before last year’s water intervention, this task consumed her time and had a negative impact on her.

Drinking the water caused severe consequences. Many in the community suffered from waterborne diseases that created health problems, affecting their daily lives. Limited accessibility also meant people wasted time collecting sufficient water to meet their needs. The difficult journey to collect water sapped their physical and emotional energy, creating roadblocks. For Ester, in particular, it lessened her opportunity to keep her family healthy.

"We fetched water the only way we knew how, slowly, carefully, and often with frustration. There was no pipe, no spout, just a shallow hole in the ground where water pooled. We had to scoop it out with small jugs, one pour at a time. On days when we were in a hurry, we would submerge our containers in the source, hoping they would fill faster. This only made things worse," said Ester.

"Fetching water here has become quite a joy. There’s no more rushing to the spring in the morning, no long queues or fear of finding the source disturbed. Whether you come in the morning sun or late in the day, it’s always there, cool and clean. The burden we once carried has been lifted. What was once a daily struggle has become a peaceful routine," shared Ester.

"I’ve kept my family healthy. I’ve even managed to grow more food than before, and that has helped with our meals at home," she continued.

We inspect the system hardware, track water availability, conduct sanitary inspections, and collect water quality samples to identify risks. We work with our team on the ground to resolve them.

"I’ve been able to work on improving my house, tend to my farm consistently, and take better care of my cattle. Having clean, accessible water has made things easier, from watering crops to cleaning and even feeding animals. It’s removed a big burden from my day. Instead of spending hours looking for water, I now use that time to grow and build," celebrated Ester.
