Clean Water Brings Angela Dignity and Confidence!

Last year, your gift unlocked the potential for a brighter future for Angela. Since then, she and the Kivou Secondary School of 196 students and teachers have had clean, reliable water. Your contribution has made a significant impact. Thank you for making a difference!

"I don’t have to worry about getting sick from dirty water, and I can concentrate better in class. Clean water has brought comfort and confidence to our school life," celebrated Angela.

Before the Rainwater Harvesting Tank Installation

Like many in Southeast Kenya, 17-year-old Angela is responsible for collecting water to meet her daily water needs. Before last year’s water intervention, this task stole her time and negatively affected her.

Drinking the water caused severe consequences. Many in the school suffered from waterborne diseases that created health problems, affecting their daily lives. Limited accessibility also meant people wasted time collecting sufficient water to meet their needs. The difficult journey to collect water sapped their physical and emotional energy, creating roadblocks. For Angela, in particular, it often got in the way of her education. It was hard to focus on academics when her basic needs were so often unmet.

Before, the school used small, insufficient tanks that ran dry.

"Getting water was disheartening. The plastic rainwater tanks would run out quickly, especially during dry seasons. We had to depend on our parents to bring water to school or rely on water bowsers, which were expensive and unreliable. Sometimes we were sent home to remind our parents to pay for the water expenses, which were added to the school fees. It was stressful, and it disrupted our learning," Angela shared.

Since the Rainwater Harvesting Tank Installation

Your generous gift last year was more than a simple donation; it was a powerful statement of your commitment to this community and to Angela’s future. By supporting the water solution, you made clean water an everyday reality, fostering hope for a brighter future.

Reliable and clean water lays the groundwork for improved health, education, and economic possibilities, allowing people to thrive. We frequently hear from those we interview that "water is life!"

"I like that the water is now available right here in the school compound. It’s clean, easily accessible, and we no longer have to carry it from home or wait for water deliveries. It has made life so much easier," Angela said.

Clean water has changed Angela's life.

"I no longer experience stomach problems or feel dehydrated like before. Since we now have clean water for drinking and hygiene, we’re getting fewer illnesses in school, and I feel stronger and more focused," she said.

The Future is Looking Bright!

A year ago, you made a difference for Angela and the rest of her school. This is just the first chapter of their story as access to clean water continues to improve their lives!

At The Water Project, we value sustainability and want to ensure that people continue to thrive. We commit to monitoring this project to ensure the water is always flowing and safe to consume. We inspect the system hardware, track water availability, conduct sanitary inspections, and collect water quality samples to identify risks. We work with our team on the ground to resolve them.

You gave Angela a crucial tool for achieving her dreams: access to clean water. Together, we can excitedly expect that with this precious resource, her enthusiasm and courage will help Angela fulfill her dreams.

"I dream of becoming a doctor so I can help sick people and improve the health of my community. Having clean water has helped me stay on track with my studies and brought me one step closer to making that dream a reality," Angela concluded.
