Before the Spring Protection

Like many in Western Kenya, 8-year-old Dennis is responsible for collecting water to meet daily water needs. Before last year’s water intervention, this task stole his time and negatively affected him.

Drinking the water caused severe consequences. Many in the community suffered from waterborne diseases that created health problems, affecting their daily lives. Limited accessibility also meant people wasted time collecting sufficient water to meet their needs. The difficult journey to collect water sapped their physical and emotional energy, creating roadblocks. For Dennis, in particular, it lessened his opportunity to safely collect water and stole crucial education time.

"Getting water was really hard, especially as a child. Sometimes you are told to stand back to allow the older ones to fetch water. First, it was not easy to get to the water point because it was a steep slope, and the water we used was mostly collected with a jug or a small tin, which was not easy, especially when you do not have a collecting jug or tin, which was also time-consuming, " he said.

"This clean water has really helped me concentrate more in school, improve my performance, not go to school late, and do all my homework early and on time. My parents are now able to pay for my school fees so that I may not be sent home," Dennis shared.

We inspect the system hardware, track water availability, conduct sanitary inspections, and collect water quality samples to identify risks. We work with our team on the ground to resolve them.

"I have improved because now I have a lot of time to do my homework, read, and study for my exams; I would like to be a doctor when I grow up so that I can treat sick people," Dennis concluded.
