Didas Has Safe Water Access!

"I have access to safe drinking water at any time," said Didas.

Before the Well Installation

Like many in Uganda, 16-year-old Didas is responsible for collecting water to meet his daily water needs. Before last year’s water intervention, this task stole his time and negatively affected him.

Drinking the water caused severe consequences. Many in the community suffered from waterborne diseases that created health problems, affecting their daily lives. Limited accessibility also meant people wasted time collecting sufficient water to meet their needs. The difficult journey to collect water sapped their physical and emotional energy, creating roadblocks. For Didas, in particular, it lessened his opportunity to stay healthy and attend school regularly.

"Life was very challenging because while you could get thirsty, obtaining safe drinking water was not straightforward," said Didas.

"I used to fetch water from the river, but it was contaminated because people would step into it, polluting the water. When I needed safe drinking water, I would go to [the] Kyanga Trading Center, but it was distant, and the water source there was always crowded," Didas continued.

When we asked Didas what the best thing about clean water was, he answered, "Living with clean water!"

At The Water Project, we value sustainability and want to ensure that people continue to thrive. We commit to monitoring this project to ensure the water is always flowing and safe to consume. We inspect the system hardware, track water availability, conduct sanitary inspections, and collect water quality samples to identify risks. We work with our team on the ground to resolve them.

"My performance has improved, and I am confident I will be promoted to the next class because I now have sufficient time to read my books," said Didas.

When we asked Didas what his dreams were for the future, he said, "Becoming an academic giant because I want to become an engineer."
