Diana Courageously Began a New Business!

Last year, your gift unlocked the potential for a brighter future for Diana. Since then, she and the Ebulechia Community of 350 residents have had clean, reliable water. Your contribution has made a significant impact. Thank you for making a difference!

"The assurance of drinking clean water makes us drink more water in a day."

Before the Spring Protection

Like many women in Kenya, 25-year-old farmer Diana Andayi is responsible for collecting water to meet her daily needs. Before last year’s water intervention, this task stole her time and negatively affected her.

Drinking the water caused severe consequences. Many in the community suffered from waterborne diseases that created health problems, affecting their daily lives. Limited accessibility also meant people wasted time collecting sufficient water to meet their needs. The difficult journey to collect water sapped their physical and emotional energy, creating roadblocks. For Diana, in particular, it lessened her opportunity to stay healthy and complete her daily tasks.

"Before this water point was built, we used to consume dirty water because of the state of the spring," shared Diana.

"Getting water before was hard because of the terrain. If you could not walk carefully, [you] might fall and injure yourself. Sending children to get water was very risky because you are not sure whether they have fetched clean water from the pipe or the stagnant water at the drawing point."

Since the Spring Protection

Your generous gift last year was much more than a simple donation; it was a powerful statement about your commitment to this community and Diana’s future. By supporting the water solution, you made clean water an everyday reality, fostering hope for a brighter future.

Reliable and clean water lays the groundwork for improved health, education, and economic possibilities, allowing people to thrive. We frequently hear from those we interview that "water is life!"

"The best thing about living with clean water is the overall improvement in health and quality of life. Clean water prevents diseases, supports proper hygiene, and ensures safe drinking and cooking. It enhances food production, economic growth, and environmental sustainability. Having reliable access to clean water means fewer illnesses, lower medical costs, and a better standard of living for individuals and communities as a whole," shared Diana.

The Future is Looking Bright!

A year ago, you made a difference for Diana and the rest of her community. This is just the first chapter of their story as access to clean water continues to improve their lives!

At The Water Project, we value sustainability and want to ensure that people continue to thrive. We commit to monitoring this project to ensure the water is always flowing and safe to consume. We inspect the system hardware, track water availability, conduct sanitary inspections, and collect water quality samples to identify risks. We work with our team on the ground to resolve them.

You gave Diana a crucial tool for achieving her dreams: access to clean water. Together, we can excitedly expect that with this precious resource, her enthusiasm and courage will help fulfill dreams.

"Before this waterpoint was made, I used to spend a lot of time fetching water because of its broken nature and the long queue at the waterpoint. Now that all this is in the past, I spend less time fetching water, and the rest of the time, I use it on my business that I began after the installation of the waterpoint," said Diana.

"This water has helped me start a new business of selling pastries. This was made possible because of the free time I had. The availability of clean and safe water also made it possible for me to indulge myself in this business. I sell my "mandazi's" to a nearby school. This has helped me earn an extra income."

"My future dream is to become a successful businesswoman. Since I have time and resources, I will be able to diversify my business and include other commodities like cookies, sweets, etc. I will embrace my farming techniques and grow a variety of crops on my farm."

"[I] am so proud of the bold step I took in starting a business. I was always afraid to do a food-related business because the water we used was not safe. Now that I have insurance that the water is clean and safe, I can confidently sell food-related commodities."
