Clean Water Increases Ashlyne's Farming Potential!

Before the Spring Protection

Like many women in Kenya, 29-year-old Ashlyne Cleophas, a farmer, is responsible for collecting water to meet daily water needs. Before last year’s water intervention, this task consumed her time and had a negative impact on her.

Drinking the water caused severe consequences. Many in the community suffered from waterborne diseases that created health problems, affecting their daily lives. Limited accessibility also meant people wasted time collecting sufficient water to meet their needs. The difficult journey to collect water sapped their physical and emotional energy, creating roadblocks. For Ashlyne, in particular, it lessened her opportunity to grow her farm.

"We really had a hard time just collecting the water because the area was kind of swampy and had a lot of mud, which made it hard [to] access the water because it was slippery and there were no stairs. The spring discharge pipe was broken and rusted, which made our water taste rusty when we drank it," said Ashlyne.

Reliable and clean water lays the groundwork for improved health, education, and economic possibilities, allowing people to thrive. We frequently hear from those we interview that "water is life!"

"I really like fetching water from here because it has been made easier with the steps, and small children, pregnant people like me, and old people can now access the water with no struggle, and the water [is] now clean," exclaimed Ashlyne.

"Now that we have clean water, my health has really improved, and I have not been sick with typhoid or even amoebic dysentery. I am really healthy."

The Future is Looking Bright!

A year ago, you made a difference for Ashlyne and the rest of her community. This is just the first chapter of their story as access to clean water continues to improve their lives!

At The Water Project, we value sustainability and want to ensure that people continue to thrive. We commit to monitoring this project to ensure the water is always flowing and safe to consume. We inspect the system hardware, track water availability, conduct sanitary inspections, and collect water quality samples to identify risks. We work with our team on the ground to resolve them.

"The best thing about living with clean water is that now I can do my farming with ease and even live healthily with no worries of getting waterborne diseases," Ashlyne celebrated.

"Now that we have clean water, I am really happy that I spend my time farming. I have even added three more cows for my dairy farming, planted more maize, sweet potatoes, and even vegetables like kales, pumpkin, and pumpkin leaves," she said.

"Farming and water go together, and now that we have clean water, I know my plans for a better farm to earn income are very possible. I am planning on building a bigger cow shed so that I may even add more cows so that I get income from selling milk in the area and do more vegetable farming and sell at our nearby market," she dreamed.

"I am really proud that we have clean water, and I am free to do my farming with no struggle, and [it] has also helped my family be healthy," Ashlyne exclaimed.
