Lusiola Primary School has greatly benefited from its rainwater tank that was installed last year.
On a recent visit, we heard from staff and students how they are very grateful to no longer be going to the stream for water and wasting time standing in line there when collecting water.
Today, there is plenty of water for drinking, domestic uses such as cleaning and cooking, and agricultural purposes for students. The water project has also facilitated gardening at the school. The availability of clean and safe water in the tank has ensured that meals are taken on time and the pupils report back to class on time for personal studies.
The students and staff at Lusiola Primary have really done a great job in taking care of all of their WaSH facilities. The project has uplifted the community at large, and it has also reduced the prevalence of disease cases and deaths from waterborne diseases.
"Hygiene levels have improved due to handwashing after visiting the washrooms. This has greatly helped to reduce vulnerable diseases. Cleanliness in the school has also improved due to enough water that facilitates cleaning the classrooms and maintaining personal hygiene among our students," explained Senior Teacher Mr. Evans Chisikwa.
Choso Brian Jalega is a 10-year-old student at Lusiola Primary and reflected on how these projects have impacted his experience as a learner since last year.
"Enough water supply has really improved personal hygiene among my fellow students. It has also helped [with] watering our vegetables in the garden."
