Jecabet, 13, recalled what life was like in the Shitirira Community before her community's spring was protected last February.
"The water from the spring source was very dirty and smelly. Sometimes, I could not fetch water from this spring, but chose to go [a] far distance in order to get safe, clean water for drinking at home, which consumed much of my time that I could have finished my homework or helped my parents with other house chores," Jecabet shared.
Collecting water is now less tedious for Jecabet and the other community members in Shitirira.
When asked how this spring has impacted her life, she said, "Currently, the waterpoint looks very smart and attractive, with every part making it up [was] done with a lot of professionalism. As it is, you just need an empty container, place it below the pipe, and allow water to enter it freely within a few seconds, and it is filled up. The time I used to go far distances searching for water is gone, and now I can get water at my doorstep."
Having ready access to water from the spring has made a difference for Jecabet, giving her back time that was once stolen by long journeys to different sources collecting unsafe water. Now, she can use that time to look towards the future.
Jecabet was eager to share her aspirations! "I have a dream of becoming a doctor in [the] future, and now that water is available and easy to access, I use the extra hours to read more and improve my grades in school."
