Joseph Plans to be an Engineer!

Like many students in Southeast Kenya, 17-year-old Joseph is responsible for collecting water to meet his daily water needs. Before last year’s water intervention, this task stole his time and negatively affected him.

Joseph often left thirsty and missed valuable learning time, which lessened his opportunity to do well in school.

"Fetching water during break time was a struggle because everyone wanted to get water to drink and wash his/her utensils, and I sometimes would return to class without any water to drink. We would walk in the evening to draw water from [the] earth dam, which is about two kilometers from here. This was also very tedious," said Joseph.

Reliable and clean water lays the groundwork for improved health, education, and economic possibilities, allowing people to thrive. We frequently hear from those we interview that "water is life!"

"It is easy to fetch water here because it is within the school, and we get enough water throughout the school period because this tank can store enough rainwater. I am now able to wash my hands regularly," continued Joseph.

We inspect the system hardware, track water availability, conduct sanitary inspections, and collect water quality samples to identify risks. We work with our team on the ground to resolve them.

"My grades are improving because I am learning in a clean, conducive environment, and I am attending my classes every day. I want to be an engineer when I grow up so that I can help [the] community," Joseph concluded.
