Jouvolous' Self-Esteem Improves and So Does His Academic Standing!

"The best thing about living with clean water is that I clean my clothes and school uniform daily. I no longer go to school in dirty uniforms, and this has boosted my self-esteem," said Jouvolous.

Before the Spring Protection

Like many children in Western Kenya, 12-year-old Jouvolous is responsible for collecting water to meet daily water needs. Before last year’s water intervention, this task stole his time and negatively affected him.

Children spent hours collecting water before the spring protection.

Drinking the water caused severe consequences. Many in the community suffered from waterborne diseases that created health problems, affecting their daily lives. Limited accessibility also meant people wasted time collecting sufficient water to meet their needs. The difficult journey to collect water sapped their physical and emotional energy, creating roadblocks. For Jouvolous, it lessened his opportunity to attend school regularly and keep up academically.

"I was always going late to school because of the long queues in the morning at the water point, for I had to collect water for my mother before going to school. In the evening, I could not do my homework on time because of overcrowding at the water point, and this really negatively affected my results at school," said Jouvolous.

"I have improved academically because I get to school on time and have enough time to concentrate in class because [I] am no longer thinking about the long queues at the water point. I do my school assignments on time, and this has helped me improve academically. My performance is so pleasing," Jouvolous exclaimed.

At The Water Project, we value sustainability and want to ensure that people continue to thrive. We commit to monitoring this project to ensure the water is always flowing and safe to consume. We inspect system hardware, monitor water availability, conduct sanitary inspections, and collect water-quality samples to identify risks. We work with our on-the-ground team to resolve them.

"My hygiene has really changed, [I] am no longer going to school in dirty school uniforms. I wash them using this water, and I bathe daily. I remember the training about personal hygiene and [I] am happy [to be] practicing it," Jouvolous said.

The lessons Jouvolous learned during the hygiene training will surely help him in the future.

"My dream is to become a nurse. Now that I take the shortest possible time to fetch water, I have enough time to study and achieve my dream. When I become a nurse, I will give back to my community by helping them acquire quality medication," Jouvolous declared.
