Kevin Has Big Plans for Clean Water!

Last year, your gift unlocked the potential for a brighter future for Kevin. Since then, he and the Shipala Community of 200 residents have had clean, reliable water. Your contribution has made a significant impact. Thank you for making a difference!

"The confidence that comes with the availability of clean and safe water is unmatched, making [me] believe that I enjoy good health every day. Each day I drink clean water, eat food prepared using clean water, wear clean clothes, and stay in a clean environment."

Before the Spring Protection

Like many in Kenya, 31-year-old Kevin Mulati is responsible for collecting water to meet his and his family's daily water needs. Before last year’s water intervention, this task stole his time and negatively affected him.

Drinking the water caused severe consequences. Many in the community suffered from waterborne diseases that created health problems, affecting their daily lives. Limited accessibility also meant people wasted time collecting sufficient water to meet their needs. The difficult journey to collect water sapped their physical and emotional energy, creating roadblocks. For Kevin, in particular, it lessened his opportunity to work his farm as needed.

"Fetching clean water for home use was a big challenge, especially when one visits the water point during the day. [A] long queue was being experienced at the waterpoint because of the scooping process, which was time-consuming, tiring, and could make [the] water dirty after a short period. A lot of fights arose among people, especially children, who could fight each other, every child wanting to fetch water first before the others. This created punishment for the children by their parents when they returned home with dirty water or sometimes with no water," he shared.

Since the Spring Protection

Your generous gift last year was much more than a simple donation; it was a powerful statement about your commitment to this community and Kevin’s future. By supporting the water solution, you made clean water an everyday reality, fostering hope for a brighter future.

Reliable and clean water lays the groundwork for improved health, education, and economic possibilities, allowing people to thrive. We frequently hear from those we interview that "water is life!"

"The clean state of the water itself is a motivation to even fetch water [through] several round trips for my family. The fence is a clear indication that the spring eye is fully protected from sources of contamination, and this boosts our confidence that indeed the water is safe for consumption. There is no more scooping of water to fill jerricans; rather, water comes out of the discharge pipe quickly, making water collection fast. Water is now available every day, the whole day; hence, we can fetch water at [a] convenient time," Kevin said.

The Future is Looking Bright!

A year ago, you made a difference for Kevin and the rest of his community. This is just the first chapter of their story as access to clean water continues to improve their lives!

At The Water Project, we value sustainability and want to ensure that people continue to thrive. We commit to monitoring this project to ensure the water is always flowing and safe to consume. We inspect the system hardware, track water availability, conduct sanitary inspections, and collect water quality samples to identify risks. We work with our team on the ground to resolve them.

You gave Kevin a crucial tool for achieving his dreams: access to clean water. Together, we can excitedly expect that with this precious resource, his enthusiasm and courage will help fulfill dreams.

"As a self-driven individual, I did not let skills acquired during the training fade away. I have taken a bold step together with my family to make soap and sell it. [I] have managed to retain the healthy state of my vegetables by watering them frequently regardless of the weather patterns," he shared.

"Being an optimistic and visionary farmer, I have a plan of constructing a fish pond which shall be used in rearing fish and later on selling them so as to earn a living. Water from this water point shall play a key role in [the] success of the fish pond project. [I'm] looking forward to also purchasing a water pump, which shall aid in the irrigation of my crops," Kevin concluded.
