"The best thing is that we don’t have to worry anymore. We can drink water anytime we’re thirsty without being scared of getting sick. I love that I can bathe every day and wash my clothes whenever I want. Everything feels fresh and clean now."

Before the Well Installation

Like many children in Southeast Kenya, 9-year-old Favour is responsible for collecting water to meet her daily needs. Before last year’s water intervention, this task stole her time and negatively affected her.

Drinking the water had severe consequences. Many in the community suffered from waterborne diseases that created health problems and affected their daily lives. For Favour, in particular, it stole her time and lessened her opportunity to attend school regularly.

"It was so tiring! We would wake up very early when it was still dark, and my grandma and I would walk a long way to the river. When we got there, we had to wait in line for a long time because there were so many people. Sometimes, the water would finish before it was our turn, and we would have to wait for it to collect again. The water was dirty, and animals would be nearby, making it even worse. I didn’t like fetching water—it made me so tired, and I couldn’t play or study properly after that," shared Favour.

A year ago, you made a difference for Favour and the rest of her community. This is just the first chapter of their story as access to clean water continues to improve their lives!

At The Water Project, we value sustainability and want to ensure that people continue to thrive. We commit to monitoring this project to ensure the water is always flowing and safe to consume. We inspect the system hardware, track water availability, conduct sanitary inspections, and collect water quality samples to identify risks. We work with our team on the ground to resolve them.

You gave Favour a crucial tool for achieving her dreams: access to clean water. Together, we can excitedly expect that with this precious resource, her enthusiasm and courage will help her fulfill her dreams.

"I like that it’s so close; we don’t have to wake up when it’s still dark. The water is clean, and we don’t have to quarrel over it or wait for hours. It’s fun because I sometimes meet my friends, and we talk, and laugh while fetching water. It’s not scary or tiring like before," said Favour.

"My health is so much better now. I don’t get sick like I used to when we drank dirty water from the scoop holes. I feel strong and happy and can go to school every day without missing class because of stomachaches or fevers. Clean water has made me feel good all the time!" she continued.

"I have more time to play with my friends and help my grandma at home. I also use the extra time to study and do my homework. Sometimes, I help in the vegetable garden, which is fun because I learn how to plant and water crops. It feels so good to have time to do more things I enjoy!"

"I want to be a carpenter when I grow up! I love making things with my hands, and I think it’s amazing to turn wood into chairs, tables, or even beds. Now that we have water, I know it will be easier for me to stay healthy, go to school, and work hard toward my dream."
